Hands-On Learning in the Heart of the Mallee

by Julian Patterson

Stepping into Swan Hill for the first time, I quickly realised this was going to be an experience unlike any other in my osteopathic journey. The golden fields stretched endlessly on the drive, setting the tone for a hands-on adventure that would remind me of why I chose osteopathy in the first place.

I recently had the incredible opportunity to spend two days at Central Mallee Health, learning from one of the best in the field and current Osteopath of the Year, Louise Bibby, and her talented team. Alongside fellow students Bailey and Dave, I was able to observe and learn from experienced osteopathic and myotherapy practitioners, including Bayley, Megan, Taylor, and Jess.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality by the lovely office manager, Belinda, who made us feel right at home. This hands-on experience provided invaluable insights that go beyond the classroom, including the chance to shadow professionals in action, engage in practical tutorials, and participate in their weekly team session. Sitting around a casual lunch, sharing lively discussions, and engaging in a CPD presentation from a local exercise physiologist gave me a clear sense of the team’s collaborative culture. It was inspiring to see such a strong focus on continuing education and support among the team.

The team was incredibly generous in sharing their years of knowledge and expertise. From hands-on techniques to professional advice, I walked away with practical takeaways that will shape my approach as I move towards my own practice.

What struck me most during this experience was the diversity of patients I observed - from farmers to athletes and families. It was a powerful reminder of the meaningful role osteopathy can play in regional communities, where access to healthcare isn’t always easy.

If you’re looking for an immersive learning experience that combines professional development with real-world exposure, I can’t recommend Central Mallee Health enough. This experience reignited my excitement for the future and gave me a renewed sense of purpose in my studies.

I’m already looking forward to returning to the Mallee and continuing this incredible journey of growth and learning because opportunities like this are truly invaluable.
